Advertising and cookies

This site is free to read and is funded by advertising. To display those ads, code from third-party advertising partners is loaded on the pages. Those partners can place cookies and similar identifiers on your device, and can read technical information such as your IP address, browser and device type, approximate location and which page you are viewing.

Advertising partners use this information to select and display ads, to measure whether an ad was seen or clicked, to limit how often you see the same ad, and — depending on their settings — to show advertising matched to your presumed interests. That means personal data is processed when you visit this site. The processing is carried out by those partners under their own privacy policies; they act as independent controllers of the data they collect through their ad code.

What does not happen: there is no login form and no account. We never ask for your name, email address or any other detail, and you do not have to identify yourself to read anything on this site. We do not sell or hand over a visitor list, because we do not have one.

Visitor statistics

Google Analytics runs on this site to measure how many people visit and which pages are read. It places cookies on your device and sends data to Google, including your IP address, the page visited and basic technical details about your browser. Google uses the IP address to derive an approximate location and does not store it in full. These figures are used in aggregate only — to see which topics are useful and which pages need work — and are not used by us to identify individual visitors.

Map tiles from OpenStreetMap

The continent pages and the comparison page display interactive maps using the Leaflet library. Those maps load their tiles from the servers of OpenStreetMap. This is a third-party request: at the moment a map loads, your IP address is visible to OpenStreetMap's servers. OpenStreetMap is a non-profit organisation; their privacy policy can be read on their website.

Apart from the advertising code, Google Analytics and these map tiles, no requests are sent to external servers. There is no embedded video and no external font file.

Server logs

As with any website, the web server automatically records requests in a log file. That file contains by default the visitor's IP address, the requested file, the timestamp and the browser used. These log entries are used solely for technical maintenance and security, and are not combined with other data to identify or profile you.

Your choices

You can block or delete cookies at any time in your browser settings, and most browsers offer a tracking-protection setting as well. The site remains fully readable with cookies blocked. Disabling JavaScript stops the ads, the statistics and the map from loading; all text, tables and figures on every page stay readable without it.

To adjust interest-based advertising specifically, you can use the industry opt-out pages at Your Online Choices (Europe) and AboutAds. Google's own advertising settings can be changed at My Ad Center.

Your rights

Because advertising and statistics involve the processing of personal data, the GDPR gives you rights over that data: the right of access, rectification and erasure, the right to object to processing, and the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority. For the little data we hold ourselves — essentially only the server logs — get in touch via the contact page. For data held by advertising partners or by Google, exercise your rights with them directly; their privacy policies explain how.
